Previously I had filmed St Andews Parish Church Killaney just past the Temple roundabout beyond Carryduff Co Down. Now I have found the original site of Killaney old church and graveyard beside the Bow lake on the Lough road Boardmills. Surprising the old graveyard lies at the top of a drumlin hill overlooking the scenic lake. I love exploring ancient graveyards.
Killaney comes from Irish: Cill Eanaigh, meaning 'church of the marsh'. It lies in the civil parish in County Down, Northern Ireland and is situated in the historic barony of Castlereagh Upper.
The first mention of the Parish of Killaney was in an 1194 charter granted by John de Courcy. A church and graveyard were built near Bow Lough. In the Irish Rebellion of 1641 the church was badly damaged and never rebuilt, although the graveyard remained (at grid ref: J357580). From then until the mid-19th century, appointments were still made to the parish, despite the lack of a church. St. Andrews Killaney was finally built in 1867 but the old graveyard is still in use.
