A thoroughly energetic work complete with audience participation, Run, Shepherds, Run! draws inspiration from a poem by William Drummond entitled The Angel's Song. The main theme sung by the audience runs throughout, albeit being treated in different ways as it interacts with the choral writing. The audience line is sung in canon as the piece progresses, first in two parts and then in four, all the while being led by sections of the choir. The result, as Dove describes it, is "a degree of happy chaos, but this is all part of the fun".
