Hiya! Here's something completely different, a movie scene! My favourite scene from the 1962 horror movie, Carnival of Souls, where the main character, Mary Henry plays the organ. Taken from the blu-ray. I don't think this video will get many views, but I'm uploading it just because I love it. I also think this upload is kinda funny, because the time of uploading this is exactly 24 hours after I first saw this scene in the movie. I won't upload the full movie in this HD.
Why do I like this scene so much? First of all, that organ piece is absolutely beautiful, touching and haunting, second, I really like the camera shots, and third, I think this is the scene where the actress Candace Hilligoss (Mary) looks the most beautiful in the movie. Even if you Google Image search the name of that actress, the first thing that will pop up is a screenshot of this scene, which is also the thumbnail of this video. And of course, as an organ player myself, and as an absolute lover of the early 20th century, scenes like this are like my mortal weakness. :P And maybe the last reason why it's so touching to me is because I've experienced the same as in this video, I've started playing organ in a church before, and then suddenly people gathered around me to listen, and the same with a public piano at the train station, so yeah, it's all personal love.
Also, her organ playing is so FAKE!!!! But it doesn't really matter much to me. It's more funny/cute then bothering, but I can imagine some musicians getting furious over it.
Short description of the movie (spoiler-free): Herk Harvey’s macabre masterpiece gained a cult following through late night television and has been bootlegged for years. Made by industrial filmmakers on a modest budget, Carnival of Souls was intended to have the “look of a Bergman” and “feel of a Cocteau,” and succeeds with its strikingly used locations and spooky organ score. Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss) survives a drag race in a rural Kansas town, then takes a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City. En route, she becomes haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her to an abandoned lakeside pavilion.
So yeah, yesterday I couldn't sleep, so I decided to go on YouTube to watch a video or two, I stumbled upon James Rolfe's (Cinemassacre) top 15 Silver Age horror movies, where he described the movies briefly, but this one caught my attention the most, and I immediatly watched it.
My review (spoiler-free):
I personally absolutely loved everything. The ambiance is so good, you completely feel immersed in the movie. I like the pacing of the movie a lot, it goes very slow, but the structure/actual pacing unusual and could bother some people, but I loved it. The soundtrack is really amazing, it's almost all-organ, which is one of my favourite instruments. I also love the main character so much, not only is she stunningly beautiful, and played well, but I also really like her personality: Almost emotionless, very calm, very nice but antisocial, and with no fleshly desires. The dialogue is also well written, and the cinematography (camera shots) are super good for a freaking independent movie from that time.
I liked the story, it was very very simple, but well-executed. The movie is about 80 minutes long (1h 20m), and 70 of it is just pure build-up of atmosphere, you often think something scary is going to happen, but eventually it doesn't, it gets delayed until the final climax.
I also don't find it scary at all, I find it more mysterious, or thriller. It was probably scary at it's time, but the average Gothic person this day is scarier then the "monsters" lol. (not exactly monsters).
Final verdict: A really good movie, not scary for this present day, but very ambient. I would recommend this if you have a lot of patience, and enjoy slower movies.
