The Punjab government has announced an immediate 50% cut in petrol and diesel allowances for government vehicles as part of a strict protocol during the ongoing petroleum crisis.

The decision was approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who also ordered that official fuel for provincial ministers be suspended entirely until the fuel crisis ends.

The chief minister has also imposed a ban on protocol vehicles that normally accompany provincial ministers and senior government officers. Under the new instructions, only one escort vehicle will be permitted, and only for unavoidable security needs.

Punjab has also moved government offices toward a work-from-home model, with instructions that only essential staff should report on-site. The government clarified that office work will continue, but the travel of additional support staff will be curtailed to reduce pressure on fuel supply.

To keep citizen-facing services running, the government said services under e-business and the “Maryam Ki Dastak” initiative will remain available. Official work will also be supported through online meetings and teleconferences.

The government has imposed a ban on official outdoor events and postponed the Horse and Cattle Show cultural festival.

For tighter oversight of petroleum products, the chief minister ordered the formation of District Petroleum Monitoring Committees in every district.

The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has been tasked with developing a track-and-trace system for petroleum products, with representatives from district administrations, police, PARA and other relevant institutions included in the effort.

The chief minister also directed strict monitoring of transport fares, warning of legal action against overcharging, and instructed authorities to closely track the supply and demand of essential food items across the province.

Maryam Nawaz urged the public to avoid outdoor functions, refrain from late-night shopping in view of emergency conditions, and not to engage in unnecessary buying or hoarding of essential items. She warned that anyone attempting to exploit the crisis would face strict action.
