The Kiswah of the Kaaba is one of the most sacred and beautiful symbols in Islamic history. But few people know the powerful story behind the Kiswah al-Bab, also known as the Sitara, the sacred covering of the Kaaba door.
This rare historical Kiswah was crafted in 1204 Hijri during the Ottoman Empire, under the patronage of Sultan Selim, who viewed himself as a guardian of the Holy Cities of Islam.
Unlike modern Kiswah made from silk, this historic covering was crafted using luxurious velvet, hand embroidered with brass and copper threads by master artisans who spent months creating this masterpiece of worship and devotion.
What makes this Kiswah extraordinary is not just its craftsmanship, but the powerful moral decision behind it. Despite having immense wealth, Sultan Selim chose not to overload the Kiswah with gold and silver, believing wealth is an Amanah (Sacred Trust from Allah) rather than a symbol of power.
Traditionally, the Kiswah was produced in Cairo, Egypt, and transported across deserts to Mecca through the legendary Mahmal Caravan, escorted by officials and pilgrims during the Hajj journey.
Today, the modern Kiswah is made in Mecca using silk with black, gold, and silver embroidery — continuing a centuries-old Islamic tradition.
