Venice before Google Maps. My wife and I spent a good while finding our hotel, and were genuinely concerned about venturing out again and getting lost in the dark.
Once we'd firmly located ourselves relative to St Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge, we took the risk.
Worth it.
This is one of two images I captured from the Rialto Bridge that evening during what I call "the edge of darkness" — that brief 10-minute window when it's neither day nor night. The last breath of daylight in the sky, the city lights warming up, restaurants alive with al fresco diners, the scent of Italian food mixing with salt air from the Adriatic.
I noticed a gondolier steering his gondola to its mooring and kept shooting. The slight motion blur on the boat was exactly what I wanted.
