Picture this: it’s Detroit, 1965, and the stage at Hitsville U.S.A. is set for another night of smooth Motown magic. Smokey Robinson just finished crooning a love song when suddenly the studio doors explode open—literally—because Lemmy and Motörhead just rolled in on three motorcycles and a bass line loud enough to shake Berry Gordy’s pompadour.
The Funk Brothers stare in horror as Lemmy grabs the mic:
🎤 “If you like to gamble, I tell ya I’m your man!”
The Motown horns panic for a second, then shrug and jump in—suddenly “Ace of Spades” has handclaps, backup singers, and a walking bass line. Lemmy’s shouting, the Supremes are harmonizing behind him (“Oooh, the ace of spaaades!”), and the tambourine player has never been so scared in his life.
Berry Gordy bursts in yelling, “Who signed these guys?!”
Smokey Robinson just grins and says, “Not sure, but it slaps.”
And that night, Detroit invented MotorSoul.
