In a landmark act of restitution, the National Gallery of Victoria has returned Lady with a Fan — a 17th-century masterpiece by Gerard ter Borch — to the descendants of Dr Henry Bromberg.
The German Jewish family fought for two decades to reclaim the painting, which was proven to have been sold under Nazi persecution in the 1930s.
It’s only the second time an Australian museum has ever returned Nazi-looted art.
