"Fragility and resilience are not opposites, but companions."
Join North Ballina ceramic artist Lauren Hotson for a meditative exploration of her 2025 exhibition, "Beneath the Fallen Petals – Uncovering the Seeds of Surrender." This body of work finds its voice in the quiet whispers of nature, ancient funerary traditions, and the profound grace found in the act of letting go. Set on Bundjalung Country, the exhibition features a guardian-like totem, sculptures using reclaimed bones and echidna quills, and intricately handcrafted ceramic burial jars—vessels Hotson calls ‘Narratives of the Earth.’
By adorning weathered driftwood and animal bones with permanent porcelain botanicals, Hotson creates a poignant irony on the fleeting nature of life. This exhibition recap captures the raw beauty of unglazed clay and the transformative power of the anagama kiln, inviting viewers to reflect on mortality not as an end, but as a sacred transition.
