The man they call Veer Savarkar is now being questioned by his own family in a Pune courtroom. Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew who filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi, has admitted under cross-examination that Vinayak Damodar Savarkar wrote not one or two, but ten mercy petitions to the British asking for his sentence to be reduced. He also confirmed that Savarkar received a monthly allowance from the colonial government while living under restrictions in Ratnagiri.
The same testimony laid out Savarkar’s well-known views: he did not consider the cow sacred, treated it as a useful animal, and rejected many traditional beliefs. He lived as a rationalist with no special faith in God. Then came the most explosive part — Satyaki told the court that Nathuram Godse and his brother Gopal Godse were active members of the RSS. Gopal Godse was Satyaki’s own maternal grandfather.
Rahul Gandhi made critical remarks about Savarkar years ago. Instead of an apology, the case went to trial. Now the complainant’s own words are doing the work. The people who built a larger-than-life image around Savarkar are watching their own witness confirm the very points they spent years denying.
