The convalescence (or recovery period) of the French Revolution began with the Thermidorian Reaction against the Jacobins. Robespierre and Danton became victims of their own success as the revolution spun out of control during the Reign of Terror and the streets of Paris ran red with blood. This end to the Reign of the Terror and the Jacobin dictatorship paved the way for the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.
