On the subject of Latin family businesses, I had the opportunity to sit down with Carlos Gonzalez Cassis in his first English speaking interview to speak about Latin family enterprises, how real economies work, becoming more “open source” in transparency, and creating legacies that benefit Latin family businesses.
As Carlos brings his negotiation skills to Latin family businesses, he hopes to elevate them to dream, feel and think with their full imagination. He believes one of the first steps is transforming “nano-thinking to visionary mentalities" so Latin family business members can create world-class companies that can compete.
1. As Latin family enterprises have decreased by 2/3rd’s, 900,000 to 300,000, he would like the education of positive role models to be included in the multi-faceted training next to economics as well as transcendence. When there is negativity of circumstances, companies such as Santa Teresa Rum considered the strategy of becoming anti-fragile compared to a survival business. They learned to thrive in a once negative environment.
2. Let’s think and do more ambitiously through a pioneering sense of spirit: Mr. Cassis describes how NuBank, the 5th biggest bank in Brazil, expands their mission to ensure their clients are happy which then increases the prosperity of Latin countries. With $10B behind them, he hopes their example will motivate other entrepreneurs to dream big, write their business plans in confidence, pitch their plan for funding and lift their communities throughout Latin America.
3. Family members unconsciously can enable or prevent business goals, whether the connection is energetic or spiritual. Mr. Cassis talks about Codorniu, a family enterprise located in Spain whose family members rely on meritocracy with their 18 generations in business in what can be possible. While epigenetics and culture can affect individuals in their decisions, Carlos highlights Codorniu so others can learn from their decisions.
4. As the unexpected can happen, he believes one benefit from the past in their awareness around planning. Mr. Cassis conducts his own research with an alliance in the Dominican Republic specifically for Latin family enterprises; while less than 20% speak about succession, he hopes when one sees what is possible, a ripple effect occurs to create the right company culture, customs, behavior and contexts to promote the highest goals.
He brings up the example of Grupo Cisneros with their decisions to plan a half century ahead!
For his legacy plan, Carlos believes this word (legacy) is important because developing full potential means embracing ambition even in daring to think about all possibilities!
