Hundreds of thousands of Serbians protesting their corrupt government

Clashes between protesters and riot police began breaking following a huge anti-government rally on the twenty third of may. According to a report in the Washington Post, though the main rally concluded peacefully, not too long after large groups of students began “throwing flares, rocks, and bottles at police cordons.” The police charged them using pepper spray and after quite a ruckus it seems 23 of them were detained. The people of Belgrade, and truly all of serbia, are furious with hard line president Aleksander Vucic and his capitalist autocracy. He went as far as having all trains in and out cancelled temporarily due to “columns of cars” had begun arriving and joining the protests. Early last year the protestors forced the resignation of then Prime Minister Milos Vucevic, many blaming the canopy collapse at the train station that killed those people on government negligence and hiring foreign construction services to cut costs. The demands of the students and others leading the protests are simple. They want an early election and the rule of law, to accuse the government of crime and corruption. Michael O’Flaherty, the council of Europe commissioner for human rights says there are “reports of police protecting unidentified and often masked attackers of journalists and protestors.” The protests are continuing to this very day and the people of serbia show no sign of backing down especially now that they have stopped talking and begun to act together. This report may come as a surprise and that’s most likely because news of this seems to be being blocked. I was able to find this single article on the issue though it was printed by three different news agencies. Why do you think it is that this news hasn’t been reaching you.
