Rabari have a very rich cultural past and present. They are known for their unique appearance and distinct dress code. The women wear long black headscarves and a shawl called a ludi. Although they generally dress in black, they are famous for their colourful embroidery, known as bharat. As far back as the community’s collective memory stretches, the women have diligently embroidered textiles as an expression of creativity, aesthetics and identity. Their intricate designs are inspired by mythology and their surroundings, with beading, ribbons, trims and mirrors incorporated in their motifs. Women also tattoo their bodies, necks and faces with magical symbols of prosperity and wellbeing, known as trajva. These traditional patterns are passed down from mothers to daughters for generations.
