Metro adds new snow plows as winter weather moves into Middle Tennessee

Описание: As winter weather approaches Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT) says it is prepared to keep roads safe, announcing new equipment and supplies just ahead of the weekend system.

Metro has added five new snow plows to its fleet, giving crews more resources to respond as snow and ice move into the area. City officials say those plows will help clear approximately 600 miles of Metro roadways.

In addition to new equipment, NDOT reports it has 9,000 tons of salt and 100,000 gallons of brine solution ready for pretreatment and de-icing efforts.

Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell said improved preparation is already making a difference.

“Better equipment, better data, and a dedicated crew at our Nashville Department of Transportation all made a huge difference,” O’Connell said.

NDOT follows specific guidelines when clearing snow and ice, prioritizing major travel routes. However, officials caution that even priority routes could see delays depending on weather conditions or material availability.

According to NDOT spokesperson Brendan Scully, primary routes include roads that connect drivers to essential services.

“Your primary routes, think of your main arterials, are roads that get you to the interstate, to your hospitals, to your schools, to your bus stations,” Scully said.

Crews are also preparing for the possibility of rain freezing on roadways before snowfall begins. In those cases, NDOT says it will pre-treat roads to reduce ice buildup.

“If it’s predicted to rain and freeze, we treat those roads with a brine and salt solution,” Scully explained.

NDOT says staff are ready to respond as conditions change and will continue finalizing plans for the weekend storm.
