Final Installation for Under The Cailleach's Eye
“Dùthchas” is a Gaelic word with no direct English translation. It is the word for the land you come from; the land which is part of you and you part of it; it’s the stories you come from and the people; it’s your heritage and your culture. It is this which I am endlessly seeking within my practice. Scotland has a long legacy of proud people shaped by and deeply connected to the land - in ways many of us do not even realise or have forgotten. I look to uncover these forgotten parts of our culture and relationship with the land as well as ancient, now endangered, crafts and techniques once passed down through generations. Within my research, the voice and strength of the feminine has repeatedly seeped through in place name, folk culture, and industry. I feel drawn to share her stories.
In doing this, my work takes on many different forms. I am inspired by the tactility of Scotland’s wild places, of the forests, wildlife, lichen, and extreme weather. These I have incorporated into my work by means of the historic practice of developing lichen dyes, sustainably harvested in the ancient woodlands of Argyll, or allowing the elements to guide the pigments across my surface. The use of film and audio works to bring the wild into the studio, and using these creates an immersive environment in which to tell the stories I am fascinated by and invite the viewer to share in protecting this extraordinary land.
