At the 2020 World Press Freedom Day conference in The Hague, Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok announced that The Netherlands was earmarking €7 million to promote media freedom and the safety of journalists worldwide in the wake of The Hague Commitment. Five months later, during the 2021 WPFD Conference in Windhoek Namibia, The Netherlands, along with UNESCO and OHCHR, launched the ‘Global Drive for Media Freedom and Safety of Journalists’ initiative whereby the two organizations would benefit from this funding to expand their coordination to further foster an independent and free media and public recognition of the value of access to information, and contribute to ending impunity for attacks against journalists, including a particular focus on women journalists.
The creation of the Global Drive for Media Freedom and Safety of Journalists was announced on the occasion of the 2020 World Press Freedom Conference, held in The Hague, Netherlands, in the wake of the signing of the Hague Commitment to Enhance the Safety of Journalists by over 50 Ministers of Foreign Affairs.
