The master has been dead for eleven years. The order disbanded nine years ago. The squire hasn't quite accepted either of these facts as reasons to leave.

The banners fray a little more each winter. The weapons rust a little deeper each spring. And sometimes — just sometimes — if the wind comes through the cracked north wall at exactly the right angle, you can almost hear it. A battle cry. Not loud. Not close. More like the room remembering.
