The Taubenloch Gorge (French: Gorges du Taubenloch or Swiss German: Tubeloch) is a transverse valley «Klus» formed by the Schüss River between Frinvillier in the Bernese Jura and Bözingen. Above Frinvillier, the Schüss has already cut through the Rondchâtel valley. Before reaching the gorge, the waters of the Orvine flowing from Orvin join the Schüss, and to the east a dry side valley opens up towards Vauffelin.
The name Taubenloch is first mentioned in a document from 1532 and has various explanations:
1. From pigeons that used to nest there.
2. In the past, Taubenloch was spelled Daubenloch, whereby a Daube (see also Tobel) meant an abyss or trench.
3. According to legend, a young man from the area once loved a girl who was so beautiful and lovely that everyone called her La Colombe (dove). The two wanted to get married. However, she was pursued by the tyrant of Rondchâtel, who had also fallen in love with her. To avoid falling into his hands, she jumped into the gorge and died there. In her honor, the gorge was henceforth called Taubenloch or Gorges de la petite colombe.
Following a major rockfall on August 1, 2009, the popular hiking trail through the gorge was closed for an extended period. The gorge had already been closed for two years in 2003 due to the risk of rockfalls. In 1998, a child was killed and others were injured by rockfalls. The hiking trail has been open again since Easter 2010. Due to another rockfall, the Taubenloch Gorge was closed again for a week at the beginning of October 2020.
