Nero Wolfe and The Bibliophage’s Confession | A Rex Stout Legacy Series
In the crisp October of 1955, a peculiar letter arrives at Nero Wolfe's West 35th Street brownstone. Dr. Nathaniel Crowe—distinguished bibliophile and reclusive collector of medieval manuscripts—has been found dead in his climate-controlled vault, surrounded by priceless books bearing an impossible detail: human teeth marks.
The police call it a heart attack. Natural causes. Case closed.
But Dr. Crowe's final letter tells a different story. For thirty years, he belonged to The Bibliophages—a secret society dedicated to destroying the world's most dangerous books by literally consuming them. Torture manuals. Bioweapon formulas. Nazi medical experimentation logs. Texts too evil to exist. Seven scholars, meeting in secret, eating forbidden knowledge page by page to ensure it could never be recovered.
Noble guardians protecting humanity from itself.
Or so they believed.
Now Dr. Crowe is dead, and his letter reveals the terrible truth: The Bibliophages have been corrupted. They no longer destroy knowledge to protect the innocent—they destroy evidence to protect the powerful. And Crowe died trying to preserve one final document: the Haber ledger, a medieval-format manuscript documenting how a sitting U.S. Senator's father profited from Holocaust plunder.
Someone murdered Crowe to suppress that evidence. Someone with a key to his vault. Someone who knew exactly which pages he would consume as his dying act. Someone among The Bibliophages themselves.
When Archie Goodwin discovers Crowe's body amid selectively consumed manuscripts bearing a coded message in the margins, Nero Wolfe accepts the case with rare urgency. This isn't merely murder—it's a philosophical crime. If some knowledge is genuinely too dangerous to exist, are The Bibliophages criminals or heroes? Should certain books be destroyed? Is the elimination of forbidden texts moral responsibility or ultimate violation?
But philosophy becomes secondary when Professor Julian Cross—medieval manuscript expert and Bibliophages member—is found dead in his Columbia office. The murder method is horrifyingly specific: pages from a fourteenth-century torture manual forced down his throat until asphyxiation. A book The Bibliophages supposedly destroyed in 1951.
The killer is sending a message: knowledge we eliminate stays eliminated. People who try to preserve it die in ways that reference the forbidden texts themselves.
