What Happens to the Belly Button During a Tummy Tuck?

The answer is — we don’t actually recreate it. The belly button is a scar from birth. During abdominoplasty, it is carefully separated (while remaining attached to its stalk), the abdominal muscles are repaired (plication), excess skin is removed, and then a new opening is created so the belly button can be re-inset in a natural position.

Position, shape, and depth all matter. I explain:
• Where the belly button should sit anatomically
• Why it’s often slightly off-center
