This is an introduction to the wet felting technique. In these videos I will walk you through step by step the “how to” of this amazing heritage art form. It is a process of laying out combed or carded fibers of wool either in the ultimate shape for their use or as a sheet of fabric later to be cut with scissors and/or sewn into a garment. Felting uses water, soap and agitation to allow the microscopic barbs on each hair to bind together into a fabric. These instructional videos start you off with a small sample piece and the possibilities are limitless from there! If you are already familiar with the process of dry felt / felting with specialized barb needles you can enhance your creations by using the cloth made from wet felt as a background or canvas. The possibilities are endless!! Like magic, after all the layers of wool and other fibers have been laid out water and soap is applied, then the bundle is rolled to allow the raw fibers to do what they do naturally! These barbs, which naturally occur in the wool fibers, combine or lock, creating a fabric. These videos provide you with a supply list for a small sample project and will walk you through the process from beginning to end. It’s so much fun and soooo satisfying to be able to say, “I made this!”

Lisa Jacenich became interested in the abundant, sustainable, underutilized resource of wool, and she has been making fabric from sheep’s wool since May of 1998. Her personal knowledge and experience and study of fibers has been supplemented by internationally recognized experts in the field: Polly Sterling (Australia, inventor of Nuno Felting); Liz Clay (Professor, Bath University, England); Mehmet Girgic (third generation felter, Turkey) Radmilla Kuz (Croation Felt Artist/Peace Keeper). In 2012 her expertise in mechanized felt-making was recognized by the Mongolian Government. She was invited to design women’s felting co-operatives to re-establish their national heritage artform. Lisa’s creations are in public and private collections in Italy, Scotland, the United Kingdom, Greece, Croatia, Mongolia, Nigeria, Kazakhstan and the United States.
