Why my idea is interesting and worth building
Even though it can’t be a true perpetual motion machine, your setup can still be a rich playground:
• Energy storage and low-friction motion: With good bearings and careful alignment, you can get very long spin times—like a fancy magnetic top or flywheel. That’s not perpetual, but it’s efficient.
• Magnetic gearing and “gates”: By tuning magnet positions and strengths, you can create regions where motion is favored in one direction and resisted in another—useful for clutches, detents, or non-contact gearing.
• Educational experiment: You could treat this as a testbed to measure losses: spin-down time vs. geometry, distance between magnets, material choices, etc. That’s exactly the kind of rigorous, data-backed approach you’re good at.
