Modern campaigns have become fund-raising arms races, distorting whom our elected officials feel accountable to and compromising a fundamental tenet of democracy — electoral representation. Comprehensive legislative or judicial solutions to this problem are difficult to imagine in today’s environment. But in this age of disruption, is it conceivable that innovations could emerge in campaign practice that help candidates win while increasing their reliance on everyday constituents as opposed to well-heeled donors? As a new generation of Americans comes of age and the Internet becomes the dominant political medium, can people power compete with financial power? With campaigns becoming more sophisticated in how they use new technologies, there are reasons to be hopeful and reasons to be fearful.
