This isn’t CGI or sci-fi — it’s the real research vessel FLIP,
built in 1962 for the U.S. Navy and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
When its tanks fill with water, FLIP rotates “onto its tail,”
with 90 meters of the hull sinking underwater,
turning the ship into a giant floating platform for experiments.
In this position, FLIP is completely stable —
no rolling, no noise, perfect for measuring waves, wind, sound and currents. 🌊
Inside, everything is unique:
beds, equipment and even toilets work in both orientations.
