Today, we show off just how Grand Seiko managed to put on the best watch party of the year, and why they're on top of their game for it!

While for a long time Grand Seiko was the "big brother" of Seiko, in 2017 they became their own, 100% independent and unique entity. Whereas Seiko itself is focused on high value, but still relatively affordable timepieces, Grand Seiko is devoted entirely to the luxury market and, perhaps more importantly, doing luxury in a uniquely Japanese way. It is this way that, arguably, offers more value in the luxury bracket than almost anything from the Swiss.

At the Grand Seiko boutique on Rodeo Drive, we have a look at two of their newer releases. The first is the SBGA415, designed to embody the aesthetic of wintertime, and executed in a 41mm titanium case (with matching bracelet). It, like so many Grand Seiko icons, is powered by the Spring Drive caliber 9R65, with a stated accuracy of +-1 second PER DAY. Next up, we have the SBGH271, a stainless steel timepiece powered by the 9S85 automatic movement, and with a dial that is meant to evoke the rich greens and golden hues of summer. Both pieces are priced at $6300.

Grand Seiko's Rodeo Drive boutique is their first in the US, and inside, we got a look at some of the other models that feel, truly, Japanese. Take the SBGK005, a piece with a dial inspired by Mount Iwate, with a texture that is impossible to describe, and impossible to forget. Then there's the SBGH236, the dial of which is modeled after a type of Japanese silk.

But the star of the show, for sure, is the brand's 65th Anniversary Godzilla watch. 44mm in titanium, the watch features a sublime red dial that appeals to some of the design language seen on the Cocktail Time range, but with a serious upgrade in execution. The bezel is made of sapphire to create a unique visual effect, and the 9R15 Spring Drive movement is an absolute joy. It's equipped with a black and red sharkskin strap to mimic the texture of Godzilla's skin.
