South Korea has unveiled the maritime research vessel "Isabu," which is capable of launching underwater explorations for extended periods of time. Researchers tout that the vessel was built solely with domestic technology.

The domestically built 5,900-ton oceanic research vessel "Isabu" has pulled up the anchor. Befitting its nickname "a research institute at sea," the ship can sail 18,000 kilometers, halfway around the globe, at a time. It can also conduct explorations 8,000 meters deep in the water. The vessel is equipped with 40 cutting-edge exploration devices.
[Soundbite] Hong Gi-hoon(Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology) : "It is a research institute floating at sea.And a 32-member research team will be mobilized."
Scientific maritime data observed and collected by the ship will be shared with researchers on the ground in real time through state-of-the-art information technology. It will conduct research in various fields ranging from climate change to maritime organisms and underwater mineral resources.

With the launch of the Isabu, South Korea has become the world's eighth owner of an oceanic research vessel.
