Joseph DalBon, DMD, spoke with TAPintoTV about the laser technology he uses at his practice, New Jersey Center for Laser and Cosmetic Dentistry, and the many benefits this technology offers to his patients, notably the absence of pain for many dental procedures. “It’s probably the best technology that you could use in dentistry,” DalBon said.
DalBon uses a few types of lasers for different procedures. One of the most popular and favorite lasers in DalBon’s office is the Fotona Lightwalker AT laser, a dual laser with two different wavelengths--Er:YAG and Nd:YAG. With this tool, DalBon and his team can treat cavities, replacing the use of handpiece drills. “The laser light will ablate or remove the diseased enamel, the carious or the cavity, and the infected tissue, and prepare it or shape it the way a handpiece would,” DalBon said.
Unlike a drill, which destroys a tooth to remove the cavity decay, this laser uses light to precisely ablate the tooth and remove the infected tissue painlessly. The laser also doesn’t have the vibration and loud whining sound that scares some people.
“My team and I are very highly trained. It’s very important that you understand what you’re doing and why you’re doing it,” DalBon explained. “You’re not just a dentist with a laser. You’re a laser dentist.”
“Most of the time you do not need any anesthesia with the laser,” DalBon explained. “For instance, with children, I have not given a child an injection for restoration in probably ten years. Anytime you don’t have to give a child a needle, you win that day.”
Using the Nd:YAG wavelength laser, DalBon explained that it can also treat cold sores, ulcers, or herpes cold sores. “We can use this laser for biostimulation, which promotes faster healing,” DalBon said.
DalBon notes that using dental lasers improves the overall patient experience. “With the laser, we are able to provide for the patient’s oral health instead of just concentrating on fixing a tooth or repairing a cavity,” DalBon explained. “It is a technology that enhances the patient’s experience. It’s for the patient's benefit.”
