This talk delves into the societal stigma often attached to reading fiction, contrasting it with the perceived educational merit of non-fiction. It explores the misconception that stories comprised of made-up worlds are too unsophisticated or elementary to offer genuine learning opportunities. Instead of dismissing these works as mere entertainment, the talk highlights the pivotal yet often overlooked role that fiction plays in shaping personal growth, ultimately arguing for the validity and importance of engaging with imaginary narratives. "Reading is often seen as a hobby for intellectuals. That is, until someone tells you they spend all their time reading fiction. If your book doesn't contain facts and true events, but is instead comprised of made-up stories from faraway worlds, what could you possibly learn from that? Jessie B, a junior at Saigon South International School, argues that you can, in fact, learn a lot.
Jessie spent a large portion of her childhood reading on the beanbags in the fiction section of her school library. As she grew older, however, she realized that at some point, while reading non-fiction was seen as an educational activity, her favorite book genres had been deemed too unsophisticated to serve any purpose other than pure entertainment.
In this talk, Jessie shares her own journey with fiction and offers her take on the pivotal, yet often overlooked role that it can play in our lives, ultimately encouraging us to spend a little more time with the stories we love." This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
