King Christian IX and Queen Louise of Denmark were known as the "Father in law and Mother in law of Europe." They were masters of dynastic marriages. Their children became kings and queens, empresses and duchesses, marrying into the great houses of Great Britain, Russia, and Greece. Their family was the model of success and respectability.
But behind this perfect facade hid the quiet tragedy of their youngest daughter, Princess Thyra. Unlike her ambitious sisters, Alexandra and Dagmar (Minnie), Thyra was a gentle, shy, and kind-hearted girl.
And it was she, the quietest of them all, who fell in love. Her choice was a young lieutenant in the Danish cavalry. Their romance was passionate but doomed. He was a commoner, and marriage was impossible.
And then, the unthinkable happened for an unmarried princess in the Victorian era: Thyra became pregnant. The scandal would have been catastrophic. It could have destroyed her family's flawless reputation and ruined their brilliant dynastic plans.
The royal family launched a massive cover-up operation. It was officially announced that Princess Thyra was ill with jaundice and required a long period of rest abroad. Under this pretext, she was secretly sent to her brother, King George I of Greece. In Athens, far from prying eyes, she gave birth to a daughter.
The fate of the child and her lieutenant father remains a matter of debate, but one thing is clear: Thyra was forced to give up her baby. The girl was presumably adopted and vanished from the pages of history. And her lover reportedly took his own life after a heated confrontation with the King.
Heartbroken, having endured an
unimaginable loss, Thyra returned to Denmark as if nothing had happened. Her secret was safe. Soon after, she was married off to the Crown Prince of Hanover, Ernst August, whose kingdom had been annexed by Prussia. She became the wife of a king without a kingdom, which perhaps suited her melancholy state.
She spent the rest of her life in exile in Austria, suffering from depression. She never recovered from her first, tragic love and the loss of her child.
