This is variant B in the Francis Child collection, attributed to 'Scott's Minstrelsy' Vol. 2, from 1802, with the note that it was taken down from the memory of Miss Christian Rutherford.

Most variants refer to a Gil Brenton as the groom, but also Dingwall, Brangwill or Bothwell. The title Cospatrick is associated with the Dunbar Clan.
