Judge Margaret McKeown (U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit) opened the forum with a sobering warning:

“The Chief Justice said the rule of law is endangered, and he was not crying wolf… Attacks on our courts in the U.S. are starting to resemble those in authoritarian regimes.”

Drawing on her decades of international judicial work, she detailed a global “rule of law recession,” citing: Venezuela, Turkey, and Poland as examples of courts under siege.

Because judges are ethically constrained from defending themselves publicly, McKeown issued a call to action:

“When judges can’t speak for themselves, it’s the legal community’s job to stand up, stand tall, and stand for justice.”
