THE BUVUMA LAND COMPENSATION SAGA:
More than ten years later, residents of Buvuma who gave up their land for the National Oil Palm Project are yet to be fully compensated. This raises a critical question: who is deliberately delaying payments and risking the failure of the project?
The investor requires 5,000 hectares to plant oil palm trees, but since 2015 this target has not been achieved. As a result, the establishment of a palm oil mill in Buvuma has been delayed. So far, only 2,600 hectares have been planted. Without securing the remaining 2,400 hectares, the investor cannot develop the mill on the island.
In response, a joint team from Operation Wealth Creation, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, and the Ministry of Agriculture led by the State Minister for Lands is currently in Buvuma to resolve the matter. Of the UGX 28 billion required for compensation, UGX 14 billion has already been released to pay some of the affected residents.
