Описание: 〈Entangled Body〉를 기획하게 된 계기는 경연 방송을 보던 순간에서 시작되었습니다. 무대 위에서 서로를 밀어내며 경쟁하는 젊은 무용수들의 모습은 분명 매혹적이었습니다. 동시에 그 장면은, 치열한 시스템 속에서 몸이 얼마나 빠르게 소모되고 있는지, 그리고 그 소모가 얼마나 자연스럽게 “아름다움”이라는 이름으로 정리되는지를 보여주는 듯했습니다. 그 감각이 제게는 오래 남았고, “경쟁과 무용수의 몸”을 작품으로 다뤄보고 싶다는 생각으로 이어졌습니다.

처음에는 경쟁과 긴장의 구조, 즉 서로를 밀어내는 힘과 그 압박을 중심으로 바라보고자 했습니다. 그런데 실제로 윤혁중, 박진호, 김유찬 세 사람을 모델로 엮어가는 과정에서 제 시선은 조금씩 다른 방향으로 이동했습니다. 경쟁의 긴장 너머에서 피어나는 조화가 더 깊은 층위를 갖고 있다는 확신이 생겼기 때문입니다. 경쟁이 전부인 세계처럼 보일 때에도, 같은 시간을 통과한 몸들은 서로의 리듬을 알아차리고 결국 함께 서는 법을 배워가고 있었습니다.

세 무용수와의 미팅은 작품의 장면을 디자인하는 데 중요한 재료가 되었습니다. 각자의 개인적인 이야기를 듣는 과정에서, 이 작품이 단순한 경쟁 구조의 재현이 아니라 세 개의 삶을 배경으로 춤이 피어나는 순간들을 담아야 한다는 생각이 들었습니다. 저는 관객이 이 영화를 통해 세 사람의 춤만이 아니라, 그 춤이 태어난 삶의 결을 함께 느끼기를 바랐습니다.

이번 작업에서도 여러 레이어를 염두에 두고 구성하였습니다. 무용 팬들은 움직임의 의미를 세밀하게 읽고, 영화 팬들은 미장센과 구조를 즐길 수 있기를 바랐습니다. 그리고 더 넓은 관객에게는 말과 문자의 벽 없이 춤으로 다가가는 입구가 되었으면 했습니다. 언어는 를 너머 예술의 깊이가 여러 겹으로 쌓일수록 '이해했다'는 말이 종종 너무 단순해지기도 합니다. 저는 몸이 그 벽을 넘어설 수 있다고 믿습니다. 말로 다 전할 수 없는 진심, 언어로 붙잡히지 않는 공감이 몸의 감각으로 전달될 수 있기를 바랍니다.

또한 〈Entangled Body〉는 결과물로서의 영화이면서, 제가 이 작업을 단계별로 접근해 온 과정의 기록이기도 합니다. 윤혁중, 박진호, 김유찬 세 무용수와 변가빈 무브먼트 디렉터와 함께였기에 만들어질 수 있었던 형상, 그것을 구현하기 위해 애쓴 스태프들의 노력, 그리고 후원 프로젝트를 통해 작품에 연결된 관객들의 마음까지. 이 모든 요소가 맞물려 작품의 장면마다 새겨져 있다고 믿고 있습니다.

The impulse to create Entangled Body began the moment I was watching a dance competition show. The sight of young dancers pushing against one another on stage was undeniably captivating. At the same time, it felt as if the scene revealed how quickly bodies are consumed within a ruthless system, and how naturally that consumption is packaged under the name of “beauty.” That feeling stayed with me for a long time, and it led me to want to explore “competition and the dancer’s body” through a work.

At first, I wanted to focus on the structure of competition and tension, the force of pushing one another away and the pressure it produces. But as I began shaping the piece around three dancers, HyeokJung Yun , Jinho Park, and Yuchan Kim, my perspective gradually shifted. I came to believe that the harmony that emerges beyond competitive tension holds a deeper layer. Even when competition seems like everything, bodies that have passed through the same time begin to recognize each other’s rhythms, and slowly learn how to stand together.

Meeting with the three dancers became essential material for designing the scenes. As I listened to their personal stories, I realized this film should not simply reenact a competitive structure, but rather hold moments where dance blooms from the background of three distinct lives. I hoped audiences would feel not only the dancers’ movement, but also the texture of the lives from which that movement is born.

In this project, I also built the work with multiple layers in mind. I hoped dance audiences could read the meaning within movement, and that film audiences could enjoy the mise-en-scène and structure. For a wider audience, I wanted it to become an entry point into dance without the barrier of language or text. As the depth of art accumulates in many layers, the phrase “I understood it” can sometimes feel too simple. I believe the body can cross that boundary. I hope that sincerity which cannot be fully spoken, and empathy that cannot be contained by language, can be carried through bodily sensation.

Entangled Body is not only a film as an outcome, but also a record of how I approached this work step by step. The form that could only be made with HyeokJung Yun, Jinho Park, and Yuchan Kim, together with movement director Byun Gabeen, the efforts of the crew who worked to realize it, and the hearts of the audience who became connected to the film through the crowdfunding project, too. I believe all of these elements interlock and are etched into each scene of the work.
