When Les Misérables was released in 1862, author Victor Hugo was on vacation but eager to know how his book was selling. Rather than writing a full letter, he sent his publisher a telegram containing only one character: “?”. The publisher replied with just “!”. That two-symbol exchange became legendary as the shortest correspondence in history — and a triumphant sign of Hugo’s literary success.
