Family of Missing Chinese Scholar Zhang Yingying Meets With University Officials in U.S.

Описание: Family members of missing Chinese visiting scholar Zhang Yingying met officials of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) on Saturday afternoon.

The meeting came after her father Zhang Ronggao, aunt Ye Liqin and boyfriend Hou Xiaolin arrived at the Chicago O'Hare International Airport in the morning.

Senior officials from the China Consulate in Chicago, as well as a Chinese attorney, accompanied the family during the meeting.

Zhang's father pleaded with U.S. police to speed up the search for his daughter. He said his daughter's return will be the best gift for him on Father's Day, which falls on Sunday.

The university told the family that they will spare no efforts to cooperate with the police to find Zhang as soon as possible.

Robin Kaler, associate chancellor for the Public Affairs of the university, said she is as worried as the family members, and wishes for Zhang’s swift and safe return.

"I have a daughter who attends school here. And so I know how it feels, and you just want your children be safe," she said.

"It's hard on everybody. But it's not as hard as it is on her and her family. We just keep trying to be strong. So that we can do our jobs and bring her home. That's all we want, we just want her to come home," she added.

The China Consulate in Chicago urged the police to continue searching for the missing girl and the Chinese police said they are willing to strengthen cooperation with their U.S. counterparts to help solve this case.

Zhang's aunt Ye said that the whole family is confident in the police's efforts, and they are dying to see Zhang return.

"I believe our Yingying will be back. As her family, we have nothing to do but to believe," Ye said.

Zhang, 26, from east China's Fujian Province, went missing at around 14:00 on June 9, after getting into a black Saturn Astra hatchback outside the UIUC campus.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced on June 14 that they are treating Zhang's disappearance as a kidnapping case.
