Sometimes a release makes you ask why? This one though, the only question is what the heck took so long? Motiv combines arguably their two most successful pieces in their history, taking the impulse V2 core from the primal rage and wrapping it in the Turmoil solid reactive cover from the venom shock, finished to the same 4000 grit out of the box.
I was a huge fan of both the rage and the shock, and I actually dug my old ones out to remember how I laid them out to give this new primal shock something similar. We landed on this 4.25x5x2 layout, one similar to what we put on the roto grip TNT, and one that I have a feeling will be going a number of future pieces as it just seems to do the right thing regardless of manufacturer or cover material.
And on the lanes, to say I was impressed is a massive understatement. I had high expectations as the technologies mixed together are proven, and those expectations were blown out of the water. Not only was I able to play all over the lane, the way the primal shock got through the pins was tremendous from 2nd to 5th arrow. This is the type of shape I expect from Motiv, and this piece has all of that and then some.
The turmoil solid cover stock is one that has never played like a true solid to my eye. It’s clean through the front, and fast transitioning in friction. Even though Motiv has pieces that are much shinier and advertised as being significantly more angular, this piece balances that desire to go sideways with mid lane control to make sure the ball picks up a roll, which most league bowlers will see as even more angular than the other pearl options in motiv’s line.
When considering the downsides of this piece, I think that it will struggle on flatter patterns until some friction develops. This shape doesn’t really scream benchmark to me, and with the venom shocks I have had in the past, they didn’t really take surface changes well, so when you need to control the pocket, probably not the ideal choice. But on the flipside of that, when you need to get inside and circle around the cliff, this primal shock will outshine most options available today.
So with that, here’s the two types of bowlers I think will match up really well with this piece. The first is players with low axis tilt. Yes, this is a biased take because I have low tilt, but the balance of differential, ability to clear the fronts and down lane pop from all parts of the lane is the ideal shape for those who normally have the ball hook too early on them. The second is those that are curious about motiv equipment. As you can imagine, I am a huge proponent of trying all the different brands, and this piece is just the pinnacle of Motiv’s shapes in my opinion, so if you’re curious, try this one.
The all new Primal Shock from Motiv is probably an overdue combination of motiv’s proven technologies, but its performance on the lanes is sure to be a primal shock to your competition.
