Описание: This week’s feature from “Martha’s Collection” is a gorgeous purple taffeta dress that I estimate to be from the mid 1800’s. As found, the bodice had a mishmash of fabrics added at some point ( possibly by Martha’s mother and her sewist Miss Hemish) presumably as the original silk on the bodice didn’t stand the test of time. I removed the added on scraps to reveal the original bodice shell. I thought it would be fun to create a removable separate jacket to go with the set, so some silk was dyed a bit darker with a Dylon hand dye, I muddled my way through to create a pattern based off the original bodice and flatlined the pieces with some plain black fabric. Antique beaded trim was added as a final touch. Repairs were made to the waistband and amazing cartridge pleats. It was really quite something to work on something created long before electricity was around. I picture the machine stitching being done on a hand crank or treadle sewing machine and the hand stitching being done near a window in the day or by oil lamp / candle light at night. So though I don’t know what the top looked like originally, I hope I’m somewhat close and I hope Martha and Miss Hemish would approve. 😊 Thank you to Martha’s family for this wonderful donation. #howto #beforeandafter #1850 #1860 #dyingsilk
