Can physical therapy help Bell’s Palsy and facial paralysis? At Manhattan Physical Therapy, we specialize in treating facial paralysis (Bell’s Palsy) — one of the only PT centers in the NYC metro area to do so.
In this case study, our physical therapist shares the story of a patient who had Bell’s Palsy for over 10 years and regained 100% of her facial movement through consistent physical therapy.
What you’ll learn in this video:
Why Bell’s Palsy causes facial paralysis and difficulty eating, smiling, or speaking
How physical therapy helps retrain facial muscles to fire and move again
The importance of daily exercises + progressive treatment
Real results from a patient who regained her smile after 10 years of paralysis
✅ If you or someone you love is dealing with Bell’s Palsy or facial paralysis, know that recovery is possible with the right treatment.

0:00: So, another case study that I remember is, you know, at Manhattan Physical therapy, we specialize in facial paralysis, which is also known as Bell's Palsy.
0:08: And being, I would say, the only physical therapy center that really treats Bell's Palsy, that really treats, facial paralysis in the New York City area or metropolitan area, I can tell you, we've seen so many of these patients.
0:22: And the reason why they stand apart from everyone else is because when they usually come in, the face is not working, right?
0:29: And if your face is not working, you, you can't function in society.
0:33: You can't even feed yourself.
0:34: You can't even eat without biting your tongue or trying to keep water in your mouth without it falling out.
0:40: So, the fact that it's not just your day to day, it's, it's who you are as a person.
0:45: So, when we're able to get them in on day one, and just go through, just putting the hands on their face and feeling the muscles even firing or just teaching them some exercise to do at home.
0:57: And every time they come in, we give them something new to do that within the first week of treatment.
1:03: They can already feel like the eye is moving, or the eyebrow is moving, or their smile is slowly coming back.
1:09: And these are people that have been suffering from Bell's Palsy for, you know, 2 years, 6 years, 10 years.
1:15: And the person that stands out to me is the person that had Bell's Palsy for 10 years, which I basically told them, I say, listen, I don't think I can help you, because 10 years has been too long.
1:24: I don't think I can really get you any results.
1:27: But she was so adamant, and she really wanted to work for it, and she came every day.
1:32: Every day we worked with her.
1:33: And I can tell you by the end of a good 6 weeks, she had 75% of her face back to what she wanted.
1:43: She spent the rest of the year pushing for the 100%.
1:46: So she came in for a full year of treatment, just to get 100%.
1:50: And she got it back because the truth is, like every other muscle in your body, if you work at it and you just keep doing the reps, it will come back.
1:58: And just knowing exactly what to do, right?
2:00: And knowing where, what muscles to work with is the huge difference in what we do at Manhattan Physical Therapy for Bell's Palsy and facial paralysis.
