We are on the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time; and in today’s Gospel, Luke shows us Jesus traveling from Galilee to Jerusalem, where he would be “taken up.” Luke notes two incidents along the way. A Samaritan village, which they needed to pass through, did not welcome Jesus “because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem.” The other incident involves three people: One articulated he would follow Jesus wherever he goes. Jesus turned to another but this one said he would “go first and bury [his] father.” The third one said he would follow, but he would “say farewell to [his] family at home” first.
Friends, these incidents teach us that freedom is demanded in following Jesus: Nothing should get in the way in doing God’s work. Not an unwelcoming people. Not personal concerns. Jesus himself showed this full and radical freedom in fulfilling his mission from the Father: Not my will but yours be done.
