What began as another beautiful morning in Tokyo — walking through the quiet forest of Meiji Shrine, visiting the shrine buildings, and crossing vibrant Shibuya — suddenly changed at the Imperial Palace in Chiyoda. One wrong step on the open square left me with a fractured leg on one side and multiple breaks on the other.

But what stays with me most is not the accident. It’s the kindness.

Strangers rushed toward me immediately — offering water, shade, soft words, and comfort while I lay on the hot stone, trying to stay calm in the sun. The ambulance brought me to the University of Tokyo Hospital, where the real heart of this story unfolded.

Even though almost nobody spoke English, the entire hospital staff cared for me with a gentleness I have rarely experienced in my life. Nurses, doctors, assistants — every single person approached me with patience, respect, and quiet attentiveness. They smiled, reassured me, slowed down when I looked afraid, and treated me not as a burden, but as someone to be protected. Their presence made me feel safe in a foreign country and gave me strength in the middle of pain.

And then there was the kindness beyond the hospital walls: Koma’s parents, who welcomed Jeanne into their home as if she were their own daughter, supported every translation, every form, every conversation with the doctors, and stayed with us through every difficult moment.

This is not the Japan I planned to see… It is the Japan that changed me — through gentleness, humanity, and quiet care.
