Review: Makai Kado - Baron the Thunder Knight

Baron, the Thunder Knight, is our first Makai Kado retail release to be a completely new mold not based on a previous Equip & Prop figure. He was released in May for ¥4,500. The Baron (say it in Japanese or use the English word, either or) armor is worn by Wataru, Kouga's old teacher played by Kenji Matsuda, who previously played Jiro, the blue wolfen tribesman in Kiva. While I'm sure it was unintentional, it's cool to see Kenji once again be a blue wolf thing. The toy is a bit lighter than the previous Makai Mado releases, but has improved articulation, especially in the thigh area compared to the old E&P releases. The thighs, shoulders, and head still have some hinderances, but it's definitely workable. Unfortunately, the accessory count is weak, only including two relaxed hands, a sword holding hand, and the Raimeiken, his scimitar weapon. The weapon is done in plastic instead of die-cast, but it features some nice detailing as to be expected from Tamashii. Overall, Baron is a fantastic release that in terms of mold, issues, and paint, trumps the previous Makai Kado releases. Unfortunately, the low accessory count makes the price seem a bit too high for what you get. If you're a huge fan of Wataru, the Baron armor, or this line, then by all means pick it up. Otherwise, try to find a deal on Mandarake or on a sale to hopefully get this for a bit cheaper price, as it's a fantastic figure that just costs a little more than he needs to, despite the 7" scale.
