드론의 대중화, 2016 코리아 드론 챔피언십 대회 인천에서 열려
The city of Incheon hosted this year's Korea Drone Championship over the weekend, which brought countless drone hobbyists and racers to the arena.
But it was also an opportunity for people to how this fairly new technology... is already expanding into people's everyday lives.
Hwang Hojun has this story.
From kids,... to adults...
They've all got one thing in common -- their love for high-tech drones.
On Saturday and Sunday, drone enthusiasts gathered at the 2016 Korea Drone Championship at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium.
It's the first drone championship, and the biggest, to be sanctioned by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
With thousands of people participating, the event was more than just a race for unmanned flying objects.
"The drone business is highly strategic with potential for an immense synergy effect. It's not only limited to leisure and sports, but can be applied in various fields including logistics, art and conservation."
And as proof of the minister's comment, a series of demonstration and performances took place in the opening ceremony.
All different in shape and functions, but all used in real life.
"Drones are already widely used in the agricultural sector, helping farmers spray pesticides without risking their own health. They are also used in facility inspections, especially in places relatively difficult to reach."
Experts also say that in agriculture and industry, drones are more economical than manned vehicles.
They say that's the main reason for a boom in the drone industry over the past five years.
Moreover, entertainment-wise, experts credit a change the general public's view of these personal flying machines, helping drone racing gradually become a legitimate competitive sport.
"The drone industry is growing exponentially compared to that of radio-controlled devices, which has already been out there for a while. The difference is people and the government don't consider drones merely as toys. Rather they see them as a business opportunity. It's similar to what Formula One racing is to the auto industry."
"The 2016 Korea Drone Championship offers more proof that drones are no longer the exclusive property of the military. Rather, drones have become an entertaining and accessible technology for regular people as well as industries. With more deregulation efforts underway, sky is the limit for the future of drones.
