The Church of God in Christ, founded in 1897 and with its world headquarters in Memphis, Tenn., is the largest black Pentecostal denomination and the second-largest of all black Christian groups in the United States. It possesses a rich spiritual heritage with roots in both the African American experience and the spiritual revival that manifested itself among black and white Christians at the beginning of the twentieth century. The church, a "Pentecostal holiness" denomination, emphasizes a life of holiness in the Methodist tradition while adding the "necessity" of the Pentecostal baptism with the Holy Spirit to its dogma. The denomination also is Arminian in theology (against the Calvinist concept of predestination) and Wesleyan in doctrine.

The Church of God in Christ was founded by Charles Harrison Mason, who had been dismissed by his black Baptist church in Arkansas because of his beliefs concerning sanctification. The movement toward a deeper spiritual experience, which sprang from Baptist and Methodist theology, was both interdenominational and antisectarian. Mason's group, however, experienced an early break with major black Baptist conventions over issues of culture, personality, and class differentiation. Mason, who became the "General Overseer and Chief Apostle" (later, senior bishop) of the denomination, envisioned a "Pentecostal empowerment" that would, through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, equip the poor for both personal survival and social growth.

BISHOP J. LOUIS FELTON, Senior Pastor and Servant Leader, has invested over half a century in the Gospel Ministry. Bishop Felton serves the Mt. Airy Church of God in Christ, founded by the Bishop Ernest C. Morris, Sr., the presiding prelate of the Koinonia PA Jurisdiction. Mt. Airy is located at 6401 Ogontz Avenue in Philadelphia, PA., 19126.

Through the ministry of Servant Leadership of Bishop Felton, over 2,000 souls have received the Kingdom. Bishop Felton was appointed as Pastor of Mt Airy in 2010 and has led the congregation to invest over $1,000,000 in capital improvements and ministry development. The Mt. Airy Congregation now has services broadcast on The Word Network, Livestreaming as well as local television broadcasts. The Sunday morning 10:45 am worship is broadcast live for one hour on AM Radio Station WNAP, webcast on (gospelhighwayeleven.com). Bishop Felton serves the community as the Philadelphia NAACP First Vice-President and chair of the Religious Affairs Committee; and Second Vice President of the Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity. Bishop Felton was the Noon Day Speaker at the reknown Hampton Minister’s Conference in June of 2013, and the Keynote Speaker for the 105th Annual Holy Convocation of the Church of God in Christ on Sunday, November 12, 2012, for the Episcopal Consecration of Bishops and Communion Service.

Bishop Felton and the Mt. Airy church family successfully hosted the National Men Perfecting Men Conference, May 3-5, 2017. Mt. Airy celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2016 with a Souvenir Journal, a Pictorial Membership Directory, The Trumpet of Jubilee Newsletter and a Golden Jubilee Banquet.

In July of 2013, at the National Auxiliaries In Ministry Convention, Bishop Felton was appointed Director of Men’s Ministry & Homiletics for the Int’l Sunday School Department of the Church of God in Christ.

From 1991-2010, Dr. Felton served as Senior Pastor of The Galilee Baptist Church of Kalamazoo, Michigan. successfully completing construction of a new facility in December, 2004, valued at over $5,000,000 and owning all 4 corners of the intersection where the congregation worships.

As President of the North Side Ministerial Alliance, he was instrumental in obtaining a $180,000 grant from ELCA for the founding of ERACCE (Eradicating Racism and Claiming/Celebrating Equality); also the recipient of a $3 million dollar grant from the Compassion Capital Fund of the Faith Based Initiative of the Federal Government in 2004-2006. Dr. Felton is also the co-founder of ISAAC (Interfaith Strategy for Advocacy and Action in the Community).

Bishop Felton is an alumnus of Western Michigan University and attended McCormick Theological Seminary, Western Theological Seminary and Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, receiving the Doctorate of Divinity (Honorary) from the St. Thomas Christian College in April of 2004.
