Three-year-old Christian girl killed in Nigeria
10 people, including a 3-year-old girl, have been killed following an attack by Muslim militia upon a Christian village in north west Nigeria. The lethal raid took place in the village of Tudun Agwalla in Kaduna state in the early hours of June 3rd. It was carried out by Fulani militia whose ranks are drawn from the largely Muslim, semi-nomadic Fulani people of west-central Africa. Among the dead was 3-year-old Elizabeth Samaila who suffered multiple machete cuts to her head during the attack. She died the next day in hospital. The human rights group, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, say the killings are but the latest in a string of violent attacks upon Christian villages in the southern part of Kaduna which, they believe, is steadily being transformed into, quote, “killing fields”.
Father McGivney’s “solid foundations of holiness”
The Supreme Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus says beatification of its 19th century founder, Father Michael McGivney, reveals the solid foundations of holiness upon which the organization has been built. Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore made his comments in an interview with Vatican News. Last month the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints approved a miracle attributed to the intercession of Father McGivney, thus paving the way for his beatification. Archbishop Lori spoke of Father McGivney’s great love for the poor, for the widow and the orphan.
Northern Irish Assembly rejects abortion liberalization
The Northern Irish Assembly has voted to reject new laws currently being imposed upon the province by the British Government that would liberalize the provision of abortion in Northern Ireland. The new laws were passed by the United Kingdom parliament in London last July due to the absence of a functioning Northern Irish Assembly which was, at that time, suspended due to the inability of the province’s political parties to form a functioning government. The laws came into effect in March of this year. Now, however, the Northern Irish Assembly is back up and running and its representatives have voted 46 to 40 to reject those new abortion laws.
Bishop calls upon UK to oppose Chinese security law
A leading English cleric is calling upon the UK government to help safeguard fundamental freedoms for the people of Hong Kong, the former British colony that was handed back to China in 1997. Speaking on behalf of the Bishops of England & Wales, Bishop Declan Lang of Clifton has written to the UK Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab. In the letter Bishop Lang expresses his deep concern at a new security law being proposed by China which, he says, will erode Hong Kong’s autonomy and suppress its political freedoms. The new legislation, suggests Bishop Lang, also breaches the Sino-British Treaty that was agreed when Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule 23 years ago.
Catholic family petitions court for daughter’s release
The family of a kidnapped Catholic girl in Pakistan have taken their campaign to seek her release to the highest court in their province. The family of young Maira Shahbaz, who is from Madina town in the city of Faisalabad, claim she was abducted at gunpoint in April by local man Mohamad Nakash who, they say, then forced Maria to both marry him and convert to Islam. Maria’s family say they have official documentation proving she is only 14 years old and, therefore, not eligible to marry. However, the local magistrates court last week sided with Mr. Nakash who claims Maria is 19 years old. Now Maira’s family is taking their case to the highest court in the Punjab province, the Lahore High Court, in a bid to get that decision overturned.
Former abortionist to anchor new pro-life talk show
The former abortionist turned pro-life advocate, Abby Johnson, is to host a new five-part interview series on the Christian streaming service, PureFlix, which aims to inspire audiences to think more deeply about the sanctity of life. The new program, entitled “Beautiful Lives”, promises to feature a series of moving testimonies of people who have left the abortion industry. Speaking on Fox News, Abby Johnson says she hopes her new TV series will help people see the reality behind the pro-abortion propaganda.
