The Supreme Court has also taken note of allegations that seven judicial officers were held hostage for nearly nine hours in Kaliachak. The bench flagged a growing trust deficit and the escalating row between the state government and the Election Commission of India. The CJI termed the incident a brazen attempt to browbeat and demoralise judicial officers, calling it a deliberate effort to obstruct the ongoing process. He asserted that law and order cannot be taken into anyone’s hands, noting the officers were performing their solemn duty.
