The Coalition of Igbo Political and Social-Cultural Groups in Lagos State has publicly distanced itself from the planned nationwide protests scheduled for August 1-10, 2024. The coalition, comprising 16 different Igbo groups, urged Igbo traders in Lagos to stay home and not open their businesses during the protests to avoid potential attacks. The group emphasized that the current economic hardship is not unique to Nigeria and not caused by President Bola Tinubu's administration. They expressed concern over being wrongly accused of organizing protests, which has put their community at risk.
The coalition's leaders, including President Sunday Ossai and Coordinator Anselm Njoku, stated that the Igbo community in Lagos is not involved in organizing the protests and should not be associated with any potential destruction. They highlighted their commitment to contributing positively to the state and urged President Tinubu to be given time to address the nation's issues, noting his recent approval of the South East Development Commission. They also called for the protection of Igbo businesses and families during the protests and stressed that their community seeks to develop, not destroy, wherever they reside.
