Operation Charnwood; taking of Caen 6 weeks after D-day by the British and Canadian troops.

Описание: Operation Charnwood was the third attempt to take German occupied Caen. Three allied divisions came up against the 12th SS and the 16th Luftwaffe. After an evening bombing raid on the 7th July the attack started at dawn on the 8th and continued on the 9th. Would be followed by Operation Goodwood.
Much of the population that remained, sheltered in the abbey aux hommes. Caen was destroyed by 80%.
