Video Editor’s Notes:

1. To examine how it is beneficial for an orchestra conductor or music educator to edit his/her players’ video clips, I decided to edit the videos by myself, learning video editing programs from scratch as I had studied Finale music notation software with tutorials that looked like an encyclopedia.

2. Video editing programs used for this project: Final Cut Pro & Adobe Premiere Pro

3. Computer used for this project: iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019; Processor: 3GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5; Memory: 8 GB 2667 MHz DDR 4; Graphics: Radeon Pro 570X 4 GB; Storage: 1 TB internal hard drive & 5 TB external hard drive ).

4. I gave up on making a fancy video product by simply putting all the videos into one screen so that all the students can watch their own part from the beginning to the end.

5. Encoding/Rendering (Exporting): After video editing, the encoding/rendering process takes a lot of time, for example, the estimated time remaining usually is around 200 hours, which resulted in the delay of the video release. My Apple computer often gets frozen or fails (update: I learned how to convert various video files into one type).

6. An ensemble of more than 100 performers: I split an eight min long video into seven or more parts (501 Finlandia & 502 Hymn Symphony). The average encoding time for a one min video segment is about 15 hours.

7. In concert, I planned to use Zoom for the performers and YouTube Live Stream for the audience. I tried “Side-by-Side” to broadcast both “Share Screen” (for backing tracks) and “small panels in gallery view” (for the audience to see the performers), but YouTube Live Stream resulted in “Share Screen” and “the host’s video panel” only.

8. Video Editing; My computer is getting slow: When I edit the individual video clips of a medium or big ensemble (more than 30 clips) on the one screen, I can hardly move, resize, or line them up. For example, I wanted to relocate a video and moved it with my mouse. It took more than 5 minutes to see the new location (update: I learned to edit audio first, then video respectively).

9. Audio Editing:
-Quartet or Duet: Sounds perfect; runs through well;
-Big Ensemble (over 50 players): I can hardly hear the entire mixed sound. What I listen to is just one measure as it immediately disappears. I edited the audio clip only by looking at their sound graphs (update: I learned ‘Digital Audio Workstation’).

10. I planned to use both PC and Mac, but my Window PC was not able to download the total of 788 video files from Dropbox (my PC repeated to be frozen) whereas my iMac downloaded all in a couple of days (Dr. Gene Chung).
