Former top 100 ATP Player and USTA High-Performance Coach, Jeff Salzenstein break down Roger Federer and Pete Sampras serves. He compares both servers and explains why he considers Pete Sampras to have the best serve of all time.
Here’s an in-depth analysis of the five steps that make both serve unique and amazing:
1, Stance
Sampras uses an extreme platform stance, which allowed him to have a great shoulder and hips turn on his first move. Federer uses a more regular platform stance, which also allows him to have a solid first move. However, Federer’s stance does not allow him to have as much coiling as Sampras has on his serve.
2. Start
Sampras started his motion with most of his weight on the back foot, his arms up and slightly bent. Federer stars with his body leaning forward, keeping most of his weight on the front foot, both arms straight, relaxed, and dangling.
3. First Move
Sampras had a great shoulder-hip turn and kept his racquet down lagging while he brought his tossing arm up. Federer gets the racquet up into the trophy position a little bit sooner than Sampras does
4. Turn
Sampras had a massive turn and coil due to his extreme stance. His chest faced towards the back fence, as his back foot is externally rotated at the start of the motion. Federer also has a great turn, but not as much as Sampras. He turns both hips and shoulders precisely to get awesome disguise on the serve.
5. Pronation
Sampras bends his arm right after contact and finishes with a bent arm. Federer keeps his arm straight after contact until the end of his finish.
